Dr. Martin Vollmer, CLARIANT

Chief Technology Officer

In January 2010, Martin Vollmer joined Clariant International Ltd. and was appointed Chief Technology Officer and Head of Group Technology & Innovation. He is based in Pratteln, Switzerland, and is responsible for Clariant’s Research & Development organized along four Technology Platforms: Chemistry & Materials, Biotechnology, Catalysis and Process Technology. Moreover, he is responsible for Group IP Management, Group Engineering and Clariant’s Business Incubator. Prior to this he was Vice President Marketing and Business Development in the Business Unit Coatings, Adhesives, Specialties at Bayer MaterialScience AG (now Covestro) located in Leverkusen, Germany, responsible for the Waterborne Coatings and Adhesives business. From 2005 – 2009, Martin Vollmer held management positions within Bayer MaterialScience AG, including Director for Research and Director for Application Development and Technical Marketing in the Business Unit Coatings, Adhesives and Specialties. Martin Vollmer began his industrial career in 1999 as Laboratory Head, Materials Research within Bayer AG’s Corporate Research. From 2002 – 2004 he was Senior Manager within Corporate Development / Strategic Planning of Bayer AG and worked as Assistant for the CTO of Bayer AG. He graduated with a PhD in Organic Chemistry from the University of Stuttgart, Germany in 1996. Following this, he took a postdoctoral research position in the Department of Chemistry at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California, USA, from 1997 – 1998. Martin Vollmer was appointed as Chairman of Scientific Design Company Inc., a Joint Venture between SABIC and Clariant located in New Jersey (USA) in the field of catalysis, from 2012 to 2015. In 2019, he joined the Board of Biocatalysts Ltd, a biotechnology company based in Cardiff (UK), focusing on enzyme technologies for the food sector. Since 2011, Martin Vollmer serves as Member of the Board of the Swiss Chemical Society. In 2016, he was appointed as Member of the Board of the German Chemical Society and as Member of the Programme Committee Innovation of CEFIC, the European Chemical Industry Council. In 2018, he joined the Board of DECHEMA, Germany. He is married with 2 children and lives with his family close to Cologne in Germany.
