Dr. Thorsten Loehl, BOROUGE

Vice President Innovation and Member of Executive Team

Thorsten Loehl is Borouge’s Vice President Innovation based in Abu Dhabi since May 2016. He is responsible for leading the Research & Development activities at Borouge Innovation Centre in Abu Dhabi and Application Centre in Shanghai. Thorsten brings with him a vast international experience in R&D and marketing management with extensive background in specialty and base chemicals including polyolefin and customer goods industry. He is also experienced in the development of new business strategies, deriving innovation strategies and subsequent building and adaptation of existing R&D or marketing units to generate growth. Prior to joining Borouge, Thorsten was the Executive Vice President Research & Innovation at Swarovski in Austria since 2012 where he was responsible for research, development, engineering and new ventures for Swarovski Professional, supporting all other Business Units as sole research & development centre for the Global Swarovski Group. Before that, Thorsten worked as the Head of Marketing, BU Film & Fibre at Borealis AG from 2010 – 2012. From 2009 to 2011, he took up the position of head of Innovation & Technology Base Chemicals at Borealis Polyolefine GmbH. Thorsten started his career in 1995 as Laboratory Leader Corp. R&D at Henkel Germany till 1998. From 1998 to 2009 he acquired various managerial positions including Project Leader Biotechnology at Henkel Americas (1998 – 1999), Project Leader Henkel Kindai Research Centre Japan, and Group Leader R&D Organic Products at Henkel Germany (1999 – 2000). In 2000, he moved to Cognis, Henkel’s chemical division later acquired by BASF, in Germany as Group Leader “Formulation 2 (2) Technology” (2000 – 2001), Director R&D North Europe (2001 – 2002), Global Director Corporate R&D Chemistry & Formulation Technology (2003 – 2004), and Global Director Care Chemicals R&D Chemical Products (2004 – 2009). Thorsten holds a Diploma in Chemistry from the University of Münster, Germany, in 1995, a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry, Magna cum laude, from the same university in 1996, Executive MBA Studies from NIMBAS Universiteit, Graduate School of Management, Utrecht
